I have recently done the timing chain guides on my 99 540i. I spent the time going over every little detail and everything is how it should be. Once I completed timing I removed the cam blocks and passenger side intake cam turns slightly off of tdc. I reset and repeated. It sits at tdc with numbers up until it's slightly bumped and rolls over almost a 1/4turn. What am I missing here it runs but rough.

I have the tools and vanos is set. Beeps with meter reader. Everything is like it should be. It's only once the cam blocks are removed that the intake cam rolls. Nothing else moves. Just intake cam on passenger side moves a tooth worth or so like the cam is worn out and doesn't want to sit at tdc.
Had the same thing happen on my okd
2000 540, even with the timing set, I still had to take it by a shop and have them align/set the VANOS timing with the vanos timing set (it was cheaper for me to have them time it (while watching of course) than to buy the extra tools....Afterward, purées like a kitten
