I am 99% sure the clunk/knocking noise from my front-end that occurs when driving over small bumps is due to the sway bar end links. I recently replaced the entire suspension, front and rear with new ebay parts, including the end links. However, a mildly annoying clunk still persists when driving over a series of small bumps in rapid succession, also when applying moderate force to the brakes and slowing to about 10 mph, then releasing the brake quickly. The clunk comes about 1-second after releasing the brake pedal and can be felt in the pedal. The replacement end links I'm looking at include Meyle HD, Lemforder, and Moog. The Moog end links come with grease fittings. The other two are sealed units. Does anyone have experience with any of these? recommendations others than those? What do you reckon I should go with so I can stop this clunk once and for all?
I have had issues With Ebay sway bar links stripping the nuts and making clunking noises, the febi links have been working good for me, also I have seen e39's have bad struts that make that clunking also
I replaced the struts and shocks when I did the rest of the suspension, so they are also new. I did re-use the spring and all that jazz on top of the strut (bearing race, boot, etc.) I suppose it's possible the strut nut isn't tight enough but I did impact that nut on pretty good. The sway bar end link did just what you said. The nut stripped and it was loose. It was clunking, so I put the original link back on. Still clunks and it drives me mad. I'll look into these febi links. Hopefully they solve my suspicious clunking. Thanks!
Thanks man. I got this quiet clunk that doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason from the back. That's probably what it is. 2001 E39. Recently changed to polyurethane bushes - that probably ended a tired link.
